Herbie's BBS ist eine Mailbox aus den 90ern, damals per Modem und ISDN, heute per Telnet und SSH. Auf einem Server laufen drei Systeme: Synchronet, Mystic und das originale ProBoard der alten ELSA-Supportbox. Dazu kommen Nachrichten aus FidoNet und DOVE-Net, tausende Dateien und Door-Spiele.

Herbie's BBS started in the 90s on modem and ISDN and is reachable by telnet and SSH today. One server runs three systems: Synchronet, Mystic and the original ProBoard of the former ELSA support BBS. On board: FidoNet and DOVE-Net messages, thousands of files and door games.

ProBoard läuft in einer DOS-Umgebung, genau wie früher, mit Cursory-Menüs, Pull-down-Leisten und ZModem. Hier steckt auch das Archiv der früheren ELSA-Supportbox: Treiber und Tools für WINNER-, VICTORY-, GLoria-, ERAZOR- und Synergy-Grafikkarten, MicroLink-56k-Modems und TANGO-ISDN-Karten, dazu Handbücher und die ELSA-Website von 1998/99. Auch das Original-ProBoard ist wieder im FidoNet: als Point 2:240/5890.201, mit dem klassischen Tosser FastEcho.

ProBoard runs in a DOS environment just like back then, with Cursory menus, pull-down bars and ZModem. It also hosts the archive of the former ELSA support BBS: drivers and tools for WINNER, VICTORY, GLoria, ERAZOR and Synergy graphics cards, MicroLink 56k modems and TANGO ISDN cards, plus manuals and the 1998/99 ELSA website. The original ProBoard is back on FidoNet too: as point 2:240/5890.201, with the classic FastEcho tosser.

Herbies-BBS II: Mystic

Mystic steht für schnelle Hotkey-Menüs mit farbigen ANSI-Bildern: ein Tastendruck, und man ist da. Nachrichten und Dateien lassen sich auch bequem in den Index-Listern durchblättern. Für Spieler gibt es die Klassiker über BBSLink: Legend of the Red Dragon I und II, TradeWars 2002 und mehr, dazu BlackJack. Die Mailbox ist als Point 2:240/5890.200 im FidoNet angebunden.

Mystic means fast hotkey menus with colourful ANSI art: one keystroke and you're there. Messages and files can also be browsed comfortably in the indexed listers. Gamers find the classics via BBSLink: Legend of the Red Dragon I and II, TradeWars 2002 and more, plus BlackJack. The board is connected to FidoNet as point 2:240/5890.200.

Herbies-BBS III: Synchronet

Synchronet ist der FidoNet-Knoten 2:240/5890 und der fsxNet-Knoten 21:3/262 und versorgt die beiden anderen Systeme mit Post. Mitglieder können die Echos auch bequem im Newsreader lesen (NNTP). Der komplette Spiegel von The BBS Archives (thebbs.org) bietet über 16.000 Dateien rund um BBS-Software, Doors, ANSI-Art und Mailer.

Synchronet is FidoNet node 2:240/5890 and fsxNet node 21:3/262 and delivers mail to the other two boards. Members can also read the echos in their news reader (NNTP). The complete The BBS Archives mirror (thebbs.org) offers 16,000+ files: BBS software, doors, ANSI art and mailers.

Three steps

  1. Terminal installieren, z. B. SyncTERM (Windows, macOS, Linux) oder NetRunner. Weitere kostenlose Programme, auch für DOS, findest du weiter unten.
  2. Neue Verbindung anlegen: herbies-bbs.ddns.net, Port aus der Tabelle, Typ Telnet oder SSH.
  3. Beim ersten Besuch mit „New“ einen Zugang anlegen und umschauen. Neue Benutzer sind herzlich willkommen! Die Nutzung ist kostenlos, auch Downloads, Doors und FidoNet.
  1. Install a terminal such as SyncTERM (Windows, macOS, Linux) or NetRunner. More free programs, DOS included, are listed further down.
  2. Add a connection: herbies-bbs.ddns.net, port from the table, type telnet or SSH.
  3. On your first visit, sign up with "New" and look around. New users are very welcome! Using the boards is free, including downloads, doors and FidoNet.

Nachrichten wandern wie früher von Mailbox zu Mailbox, rund um die Welt. Herbie's BBS ist im FidoNet, im fsxNet und im DOVE-Net dabei. Das fsxNet (Zone 21) ist ein kleines, aktives Hobby-Netz, Ende 2015 gegründet, rund um BBS-Software, Retro-Computer, ANSI-Art und Technik.

Messages travel from board to board around the world, just like in the old days. Herbie's BBS takes part in FidoNet, fsxNet and DOVE-Net. fsxNet (zone 21) is a small, active hobby network founded in late 2015, about BBS software, retro computers, ANSI art and tech.

What is a BBS?

Eine Mailbox, englisch BBS (Bulletin Board System), ist ein Computer, bei dem man sich einwählt, um Nachrichten zu lesen und zu schreiben, Dateien zu tauschen und zu spielen. Lange bevor es das World Wide Web gab, waren Mailboxen für viele der erste Schritt in die Online-Welt.

A BBS (bulletin board system) is a computer you dial into to read and write messages, swap files and play games. Long before the World Wide Web, BBSes were many people's first step into the online world.

Man rief mit dem Modem über die Telefonleitung an, oft nachts wegen der günstigeren Gebühren. Pro Leitung passte genau ein Anrufer. Die meisten Mailboxen liefen privat bei Hobby-SysOps zu Hause, manche auch bei Firmen. Herbie's BBS war immer eine private Mailbox, diente aber z. B. auch als Supportbox für die Produkte des Herstellers ELSA.

You called in with a modem over the phone line, often at night when calls were cheaper. One caller per line. Most boards were run by hobby SysOps at home, some by companies. Herbie's BBS was always a private board, but it also served, for example, as a support BBS for the products of the manufacturer ELSA.

Über Netze wie das FidoNet tauschten die Mailboxen nachts automatisch Post aus. So entstanden weltweite Diskussionsforen („Echos“) und private Nachrichten („Netmail“) von Mailbox zu Mailbox, eine Art Internet vor dem Internet. Das FidoNet gibt es bis heute.

Through networks like FidoNet, boards automatically exchanged mail every night. That created worldwide discussion areas ("echos") and private messages ("netmail") passed from board to board: an internet before the internet. FidoNet is still alive today.

Statt Modem genügt heute Telnet oder SSH. Die Szene ist klein, aber lebendig: Man trifft Leute mit ähnlichen Interessen, diskutiert ohne Algorithmen, stöbert in Software-Archiven von damals, spielt Klassiker wie Legend of the Red Dragon und erlebt ein Stück Computergeschichte live.
